In Sri Lanka, obtaining a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is now mandatory for all residents above 18 years of age. A TIN is required for various financial and administrative transactions, including opening bank accounts, registering vehicles, transferring land property, and applying for certain visas.

You can register and receive your TIN certificate online for free through the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) RAMIS e-Services portal.

Required Documents Before Applying

Ensure you have clear digital copies (JPEG or PDF format) of the following documents ready before starting your application:

  1. National Identity Card (NIC): Clear photos/scans of both the front and back sides.

  2. Proof of Address: Utility bill or bank statement (only required if your current address differs from your NIC).

  3. Valid Contact Info: Active personal email address and mobile number.

Step-by-Step Guide to Apply Online

Step 1: Access the IRD Portal Visit the official Inland Revenue Department website at www.ird.gov.lk and click on “RAMIS e-Services”.

Step 2: Select Taxpayer Registration On the e-Services menu, navigate to “Taxpayer Registration” and choose “Individual”.

Step 3: Fill in Personal Details

  • Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your National Identity Card.

  • Provide your NIC Number, Date of Birth, and Gender.

Step 4: Enter Contact Information

  • Fill in your permanent residential address.

  • Enter your Mobile Number and Email Address accurately (your TIN certificate will be delivered to this email).

Step 5: Upload Required Documents

  • In the Attachment section, upload the digital copy of your NIC.

Step 6: Submit the Application

  • Review all entered information to ensure accuracy and click “Submit”.

  • An Acknowledgement / Reference Number will appear on the screen. Save or screenshot this for future reference.

How Long Does It Take?

Once submitted, the IRD team will verify your details. Your official TIN Certificate (PDF) will be emailed to your inbox within 1 to 3 working days. You can print this certificate whenever needed.
